July Adventures

We had a lot of fun in July.  Some of our relatives came to visit, and we spent a whole week exploring the beautiful state of Washington. In Olympic National Park, we were hiking when we came upon these mountain goats, right on the trail. We spent an evening at Ruby Beach on the Pacific Ocean in the national park.  It was magical!   Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge just outside of Lacey.  Preston and I have gone hiking here a few times.  Getting a piggyback ride from his cousin Eva's new husband Zack. On July 4th, we were on Whidbey Island.  This state park is a great place to fly kites, and Preston had fun doing that with his cousin Nathan.  (That's Puget Sound in the background.) From Whidbey Island, we took the ferry across Puget Sound.  The ferry is a super cheap thrill--the kids love it, and they feel like real sailors.  ...

School

I don't have pictures at the moment due to computer issues happening yet again.  (I'm having to borrow James' work computer because our other one is currently dead.  Hoping a new cord will solve the problem.  This is the one replacing the computer that crashed last fall...  Sigh.) We started first grade five weeks ago.  Preston was determined that he did not want to be in first grade; he was sure it would ruin his ability to play all day, whenever he wanted.  However, he has adjusted quite well and while he is not quite ready to openly admit that he loves first grade, his actions and attitude during lessons tell me that he is generally having a good time. We follow the Waldorf educational philosophy, and "school" looks rather different that what you'd seen in a mainstream situation, but I love it, and it works really well.  Every day starts out with 45 minutes to an hour of poetry/verse, songs, and various movement activities such as hand-clap gam...

 This picture turned out really blurry (I think I was trying to hold the dog still...), but I just wanted to show this beautiful trail very near our house where Preston and I go on a nature walk every Monday after we drop Sariah off at her school.  It is part of our weekly routine now, and he always remembers that it is Monday and time for our walk.  Here are some cute soccer pictures: I'm not sure what he was doing in this picture. Here he's writing words to fit the two main sounds of "oo".  We learned about two sets of twins (heads shaped like double O's)... one set loves to try new foods and always says, "ooh!" when they eat something.  The other set hates to try new foods and always says "oo" as in "this tastes like WOOD".  It was a super fun way to learn this, and he remembers it very well as a result.
